Obituary for E. Ruth Ryan (Sundell)

E. Ruth Ryan, 98, of Brick passed away peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Ryan previously worked as a secretary for Prudential of Great Britain in New York City. She proudly served her country as Sergeant in the US Marine Corps during WWII. She was a member of the Marine Corps League in Newark and the Grace Presbyterian Church in Montclair.

Born in Glen Ridge, she lived in Montclair, Fairfield and Shaftesbury, England, and her family summered in Metedeconk from 1950 until Ruth and her husband moved to Brick in 1994.

Mrs. Ryan was predeceased by her husband in 2008, A United States Marine Corps WWII Combat Veteran, Corporal Robert Ryan Sr., who was also a Newark Police Officer, retiring as a Lieutenant after 36 years of service. Mrs. Ryan was also predeceased by her parents, Frank and Hilda Sundell. Surviving are her two sons, both Marine Corps Veterans, Retired Brick Township Police Captain Robert R. Ryan, Jr. and Retired New Jersey State Police Lieutenant James A. Ryan and his wife Lori; her devoted sister and companion, Frances Tenore; 3 grandchildren, Robert, Richard and Stacey; as well as a devoted niece, Janice Longo and her nephew, Peter Tenore. Ruth is also survived by her cousins, Brian, Reggie and Charles White and Jackie Mueller as well as many friends and relatives.

Throughout her life Ruth enjoyed the water views and wildlife. In Metedeconk, with her extended family. Ruth also enjoyed visits from her sons’ dogs over the years, Gunner, Maggie, Molly, Reilly and Gunny and they enjoyed her treats.

Visiting will be on Wednesday from 4-8pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A prayer service will be conducted 10am on Thursday in the funeral home. Interment and military honors will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Brielle. Donations may be made in her name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
