Obituary for Margaret A. "Peg" Murray (Pinkman)

Margaret A. Murray, 82, of Avon-by-the-Sea, cherished wife of Richard W. Kernan, passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2019. Born in Newark, Peg was the daughter of the late James and Margaret Pinkman. Peg attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Newark and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, N.J., where she served as Class President in her senior year. She earned her Master’s Degree from Seton Hall University. After serving several years as an English teacher at Franklin Middle School in Nutley, N.J., Peg became a Guidance Counselor and, subsequently, Vice-Principal. She remained in that position until her retirement. Her career in education spanned 40 years.
Peg lost her first husband, Norbert (Bud) Murray, to cancer at age 28 in 1963. As a single parent, she raised her two daughters in Newark, and later Bloomfield, spending summers in Avon. Carolyn Murray serves as an Essex County Superior Court Judge in Newark, and Mary Elizabeth Murray is the Chief Marketing Officer at the NYU Stern School of Business. Both live in Chatham; Carolyn with her daughter Elizabeth and Beth with her husband Gregory Guimond. Beth and Greg have three children, Michael, Brian and Cara Grace Guimond.
In 2003, Peg married Richard Kernan in a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Thomas Hunstiger in Vancouver, B.C. Peg and Dick were joined there by their new combined family of 32.
Peg enjoyed an ardent sense of adventure, traveling with her husband across continents into her late years. Whether at home or away, Peg surrounded herself with family and with friends— and there was never a hard line between the two. She had friends of different ages, from different parts of her life, and nothing made her happier than a porch full of people on a summer evening in Avon. She was a very active member of the College of St. Elizabeth’s Alumnae Association, the Belmar Fishing Club, the Fleet Reserve Association of Annapolis, M.D., and her Avon book club.
As well as her husband and two daughters, Peg is survived by 14 grandchildren and many dear friends, nieces, and nephews. The family counts among those friends Steve Hofer and Dr. Robert Demartin, who greatly eased her last months. Peg was predeceased by her brothers James, John, and Edward Pinkman.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Friday, January 18th from 4 to 8 PM at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, January 19th at 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Church, 424 Lincoln Avenue in Avon. Committal will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to a favorite charity.
