Obituary for Joseph Mario Zurla

Joseph Mario Zurla, 86, of Spring Lake, passed away on November 28, 2018.
Mr. Zurla was born in Genoa, Italy, came to America as an infant and was raised in New York. He lived in Glen Ridge and West Orange for many years, before moving to Spring Lake 20 years ago. He also enjoyed spending time at his second home on Nantucket. Mr. Zurla proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army, and was deployed to Korea. After his service he earned his degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and embarked on a successful career in the publishing industry. He served as a Sales Manager with Prentice-Hall and Worth Publishers, before retiring in 1995. He was an accomplished bridge player, who belonged to the Livingston and Toms River Bridge Clubs, as well a tennis player, who belonged to the Glen Ridge Tennis Club. He enjoyed watching the trotters at Freehold Raceway, as well as trips to Atlantic City casinos.
Mr. Zurla was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Matilda Zurla, as well as by his brothers, John and Alfred Zurla. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Jacqueline. Also surviving are his children, Lisa Ditalia (Michael), of Bethlehem, Pa., Eric Zurla (Deborah Dathe), of Bloomfield, Lesley Zurla, West Milford, Heidi DiDonna (Mark), of Millington, Michael Dalhausser (Maria), of Mountain Lakes, and Todd Dalhausser (Margaret) of Natick, Ma. Mr. Zurla is also survived by his grandchildren, Alex, Spencer, and Jeremy Rives, Isabella and Carly Zurla, Tommy Barnable, MJ, Brian, and Owen DiDonna, and Morgan, Max, Luke, Grace, and Nicholas Dalhausser.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Monday, December 3, 2018, from 3-9 P.M. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at 10:30 A.M. Private cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Zurla’s memory may be made to Hearing Charities of America (The Hearing Aid Project), via www.hearingcharities.org.
