Obituary for Gloria C. Hamill (Mundt)

Print
Gloria Cecelia Veronica Mundt Hamill ("The Glo”) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on November 12, 2018, at the glorious age of 93.
Gloria was born and raised in Jersey City, where she happily and proudly stayed to raise her own family. She moved to Wall Township, in 1997, upon her husband's retirement from the practice of medicine.
As a young woman, she began a career in fashion, at Bonwit Teller, in New York City, a career she loved and left only to focus on her family. Her love of fashion, however, never left her. For many years thereafter, she was the office manager of her husband's medical practice.
With all that, her real careers were raising her seven children and volunteering with community and Church organizations. In Jersey City, she split her time between the Mother's Club, at St. Peter's Prep, teaching CCD classes, at St. Aloysius Church, and the Hudson County Medical Society Auxiliary, where she and her husband set the bar for fundraising with their innovative ideas and efforts, including the now famous "Night at the Races" , at the Casino in the Park. She didn't miss a beat, after moving to Wall, joining the Rosary Society, at St. Mark's Church, in Sea Girt, and becoming a eucharistic minister, bringing joy and comfort to those confined to care facilities, with her empathy, her personality and her smile. She also spent years caring for the children of the women in residence at Epiphany House, in Asbury Park. Her life of giving was such that, recently, she was awarded the Ursula Laurus Citation, by the College of New Rochelle, in recognition of her lifetime of devotion to the ideals of Ursuline education.
She was a writer of great skill-her letters and poems are things of beauty-and, all her life, a painter of great talent. For her, life was an art form and she strove, each day, to be the best she could be at it.
Gloria was predeceased by her parents, William and Veronica (nee Follis) Mundt, by her beloved brother, Bill, a WWII Air Force pilot and hero, and by her husband of 49 years-and life partner- Dr. John F. Hamill, MD. She is survived by her children, John, Jr., William, Francis (& Julie), Edward (& Nancy), Charles (& Justine), Bridget Vallarelli (& Joe), and Mara Ponterdolph (& Al). She is also survived by her thirteen grandchildren- who will remember her, always, as “DeDa” – and by her three great-grandchildren (and a fourth on the way).
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Thursday, November 15, 2018, from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt, on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 9:30 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you remember and honor Gloria by donating either to the John F. and Gloria Hamill Scholarship Fund, at St. Peter’s Prep, or to St. Dominic’s Academy, both in Jersey City. Condolences may be sent via www.obrienfuneralhome.com.
