Josephine “Josie” Tighe, 80, formerly of Lakewood and North Bergen passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Howell surrounded by her family. Mrs. Tighe was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a graduate of St. Peter’s College in Jersey City with a bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education. She worked as a preschool teacher at Story Time in North Bergen and also volunteered her time at the Nurturing Place in Jersey City. Mrs. Tighe was a faithful catholic. She was a former member of Our Lady of Fatima RC Church in North Bergen where she taught CCD and was a Eucharistic Minister and later joined St. Dominic’s RC Church in Brick where she was an active parishioner and also taught CCD as well.
Born in New York City, she grew up in the Inwood section of Manhattan and lived in Weehawken, Middletown and North Bergen before moving to Lakewood 16 years ago.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Catherine Tighe in 2007; and by her parents, Patrick and Ellen Connell. Surviving is her loving husband of 58 years, Joseph A. Tighe, Jr.; 5 sons, Joseph A. Tighe, III and his wife, Melissa of Cedar Knolls, John Tighe of NYC, Robert Tighe of Parsippany, David Tighe of NYC and Thomas Tighe and his wife, Hannah of Malmo, Sweden; 2 daughters, Anne Santomenna and her husband, Dr. Mark of Howell and Patricia DeGennaro and her husband, Cosmo of Middletown; sister, Eileen Fitzgerald and her husband, Gerald of Bartlett, TN; 7 grandchildren, John and his wife, Kaitlyn, Robert, Vanessa, Julia, Sara, Cosmo and Lia; and a great granddaughter, Leighton. Josie will be greatly missed by her large extended family as well as her many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was deeply loved and cherished.
Visiting will be on Friday from 4-8pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A funeral Mass will be offered 12 noon on Saturday at St. Dominic’s RC Church, Brick. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt. Donations may be made in her memory to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, 3300 Route 66, Neptune, NJ 07753.
