MaryAlyce “Molly” Berkowitz, 57 of Neptune, NJ, died Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Molly was a lifelong resident of the shore. Molly was a parishioner of St. Rose Church, Belmar, and Holy Innocents Church, Neptune. She was a graduate of St. Rose High School Class of 1978, a graduate of Fairleigh Dickenson Univ. with her Bachelor of Arts in English. She earned her nursing degree at Brookdale Community College, and earned her BSN and MSN at Thomas Edison University. Molly worked as a Registered Nurse for Hackensack – Meridian Health at Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC), where she was the Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator. In 2010 she started the Child Safety Seat Inspection Program in conjunction with the New Jersey State Police at JSUMC. She was a council member for the Borough of Neptune City Town Council. She was a life member of the Neptune City First Aid Squad, and Shark River Hills First Aid Squad. She was the first female firefighter of the United Fire Company #1 Neptune City. Molly was active on several committees with the Boy Scouts of America from 2004 until 2017. She was an EMT Instructor for over 20 years and was the NJ Outstanding EMS Educator of 2013. She was active with the NJ Department of Health Office of Emergency Management BLS Sub-Committee, and the Emergency Medical Services for Children Committee. During the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Molly was a Ground-Zero first responder.
Molly was predeceased by her parents Richard and Doris Durkin and her sister Doris Elizabeth Durkin. Surviving are her beloved husband of 24 ½ years, Michael D. Berkowitz, a loving son Daniel H. Berkowitz of Neptune, N.J, her siblings; R. Patrick Durkin and his wife Judy of Brick, NJ, Tara Durkin-Rochford of Marion, IN, Matthew Durkin and his wife Laurie of Wall, NJ, her mother-in-law Xenia Barron, her brothers and sisters in law; Adam and Valerie Berkowitz, Paul and Kathleen Berkowitz, her nieces and nephews; Kaitlyn Berkowitz, Paulie Berkowitz, Scott Berkowitz, Matthew Berkowitz, Erin M. Durkin, Red Durkin, Matthew Durkin Jr., Morgan Taylor Durkin, Maeve Riley Durkin and numerous cousins and relatives.
Visiting will be Tuesday from 4-8 PM at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, 9:30 AM at St. Rose Church, Belmar. Committal will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to Shark River Hills First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 513, Neptune, NJ 07753 or to JSUMC Trauma Injury Prevention Fund.
